Anonymous asked: no really are they gay? i never quite understood the story

I don’t think Tolkien ever intended for Frodo and Sam to be perceived as gay. Their friendship and loyalty to each other is so strong - stronger than any friendship I have seen in my life so far. There are parts in the books where Sam grabs Frodo’s hand or there is a cute little forehead kiss, but I don’t see it that way. Samwise loved Rosie, they were married and had children. He lost his best friend, and sure, anyone would be sad about losing anyone they love. I think if Frodo had stayed in The Shire he would never have been able to “love” anyone - he was too deeply hurt and burdened from everything that had happened with the Ring, so he had to leave.

Having said all that, does it really matter if they were intended to be gay? No, it should not matter.
